The Indian Couple Shows Paris How To Hold A Destination Wedding!

Among the grandest weddings of the century were the Trump and Arnault weddings held a few years ago, but an Indian couple beat them to the list of all-time wedding extravaganzas when the world’s 5th richest man, Indian steel baron Lakshmi Mittal, threw a $60 million celebration spanning several days for daughter  and groom, Amit’s (a Delhi-born investment banker, based in London) nuptials in the romantic capital of the world: France!

Elaborate preparations for the only daughter (Mittal also has a son) of the steel tycoon included silver boxes holding 20 page-wedding invitations and an entertaining schedule for guests, of which a thousand were accommodated in a 5-star hotel in Paris where all 600 rooms were booked for invitees! The guests at Vanisha Mittal’s wedding were accommodated the ritzy Hotel le Grand Intercontinental, Paris and also had the privilege of luxury coaches, equipped with champagne bars, at their disposal for their exclusive transport needs.

The wedding by itself was a 5-day affair with one pre-wedding celebration for the Indian couple organized at the historical town of Versailles and another party hosted in a temporary wooden castle erected just for the day at Parc de Saint-Cloud.

This fairytale wedding for the London-based businessman’s daughter was held in June 2004 across various romantic Parisian locales, including a chateau with stately connections! (The chateau was built for Nicolas Fouquet, King Louis XIV's finance minister).

Tagged as “the world’s most expensive wedding,” Vanisha and Amit’s chief wedding celebrations were hosted in a charming, 17th-century French chateau, called Vaux le Vicomte, which was hired by Laxmi Mittal for a select few ceremonies. The decorations at this heritage site began a month in advance. Nearly 2000 guests were flown in for the wedding from all corners of the globe in private chartered planes and the Parisian hotel besides the wedding venue became nothing less than a tourist attraction at the time.

More fun followed for the female wedding guests as they were treated to special henna (hand-beautification herbal applications) treatment during the pre-wedding ceremony called ‘Mehendi,’ held on June 21st, 2004, in which celebrity henna artist, Ash Kumar (whose fans include stars like Julia Roberts and Sophie Dahl) did the honors besides being presented with luxe goody bags filled with jewels!

Exclusively designed and beautifully crafted bangles were made available by the professional bangle-sellers flown in from metropolitan cities of India, like Delhi and Mumbai for a pre-wedding ceremony held at Hotel Bristol. The bride’s henna pattern on the hands was decorated to match the embroidery on her ceremonial outfit.

Professional award-winning film lyrics-writer from India, Javed Akhtar, wrote a script for the Mittal family, which they enacted for the guests after hectic rehearsals put in by them, including professional dancers who trained them for 3 weeks prior to the event in London.

The engagement ceremony took place at the Palace of Versailles and guests were treated to an exclusive opera performance, a cocktail party with Moulin Rouge can-can girls in attendance besides a formal banquet hosted at the historical French Galerie des Batailles (Gallery of Battles tour enthralled the guests who were given a walk-through tour of the bedrooms of former French royalty) and a romantic party setting for the musical night held on the banks of the river Seine. Nearly 5,000 bottles of Mouton Rothschild consumed by wedding guests brought the wine tab up to a head-reeling $ 1.5 million!

International media were perpetually stationed outside the venues and in an overdrive of sorts to report the smallest details of the A-list wedding guests at the Indian couple’s Parisian wedding, wherein highlights included 6 truckloads of rose petals carpeted up the castle’s steps and over the poolside areas, images of Indian god, Shiva and a replica of the Taj Mahal besides a massive temple structure erected for solemnizing marriage vows that added to the mood of the festivities!!

There were internationally acclaimed florist groups, caterers and security agencies in Paris tending to the customized needs of the Indian couple’s wedding celebrations that rocked the city for nearly a week: floral showers on all guests, a 24-hour snack counter at the hotel’s coffee shop that served authentic Indian delicacies and celebrity chefs with their entire entourages flown in for the occasion comprised some of the highlights.

Other salient features of the Vanisha-Amit wedding in Paris included performances for a themed Bollywood night celebration (Bollywood is the name of the Indian film industry) by top Indian movie-stars like film actor, Shahrukh Khan (he reportedly earned $ 15 million for this show), former Miss World and actress, Aishwarya Rai besides superstars like Rani Mukerji and Saif Ali Khan! International pop star, Kylie Minogue also sang on stage.
