Celebs didn't invent the destination wedding; they reinvented it!

The above statement is worthy of being nothing short of a tagline with even the London Times having reported that one in six couples now prefers to get married abroad, which is much in part due to the celebrities having shown the effect of tying the knot in an exotic locale being a particularly memorable one!

From initially wanting something spectacular, relaxed and far-removed from their everyday lives to visions of sun-washed beaches and palace wedding venues to even the hottest gaming destinations like Las Vegas, there’s a whole new world of destination wedding choices opened up for newly engaged couples, thanks to celebrities worldwide saying ‘I Do’ at these exclusive, sometimes, bizarre but always picture-worthy venues.
Not only do the choices of celebrities for their destination weddings manage to suspend the routine of everyday living but they also allow for a personal statement of style, vision, innovative thinking and notions of romance, which all weddings primarily are based on.
Celebrities have endorsed every possible destination for their weddings, right from seaside venues to private lake resorts to cruise-ships and serene mountaintops besides the undying appeal of medieval castles and Oriental locations like South Asia where pagodas and rural garden wedding settings reign supreme!
Hot celebrities to reinvent the destination weddings include actors Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott who exchanged wedding vows against a coastal backdrop (Wakaya Island, Fiji), Hollywood’s most famous couple, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes who chose the splendour of Odescalchi Castle in Lake Bracciano, Italy for their wedding and actress, Amanda Peet who tied the knot with David Benioff at an off-beat venue in their favourite city (both New Yorkers chose their hometown) – Amanda’s school, Friends Seminary, a Quaker educational foundation founded in 1786!
Not to be outdone in picking a super-startling destination wedding option were the show Extreme Makeover’s dentist Bill Dorfman who married former Apprentice contestant Jennifer Murphy (a Miss Oregon pageant winner) at the unlikely but truly ‘green wedding’ venue offered by the Trump National Golf club in Pancho Palos Verdes, California and Bewitched movie star-cum-UK ramp model, Elizabeth Hurley double-castle wedding ceremonies with Indian millionaire, Arun Nayar: the first took place at Sudley Castle, England followed by another ceremony at Umaid Bhavan Palace, Udaipur (India)!! Liz got every young girl’s fantasy wedding with the groom coming to the ceremony in a Fountain Courtyard in the Indian Palace atop a white horse and set the trend for many more celebrity weddings being booked at various castles in India.
Another unusual celebrity destination wedding took place in a tent on the grounds of Stein Ericksen Lodge in Park City, Utah when Grey’s Anatomy co-stars, Katherine Heigl and Josh Kelley wed each other with Christmas cookies distributed all around in honour of the holiday season they were married during. Of course, Spiderman had to ditch the friendly neighbourhood act for his wedding, which was a sublime and near poetic affair as Tobey Maguire chose Jennifer Meyer as his bride in an intimate island wedding setting on Kona, in Hawaii with select stars like Leonardo DiCaprio and Lukas Haas among the invitees.
However, in a bid to cover more than one destination, Grammy award winning rock-star, Rod Stewart took his bride aboard his yacht, The Lady Ann Magee, first to his Villa Durazza situated in Santa Margherita Ligure, Italy after their civil ceremony and then onwards to more secluded, private coves and bays along the romantic Italian sea-scape!
Thus, because celebrities have introduced a certain style quotient and penchant for doing things differently (read on a grand scale), theme weddings with destination specials have become more accessible to the rest of us - what with professional planners offering budget-friendly romance, wedded bliss and sometimes even a honeymoon package within its framework – for the charms of duplicating a celebrity wedding at an unusual destination and celebrity wedding destinations have become popular as a source of inspiration!
